2018 Dantzig Prize Citation

The George B. Dantzig prize is awarded for original research, which by its originality, breadth, and scope, is having a major impact on the field of mathematical programming. The 2018 winner is

  • Andrzej Piotr Ruszczyński from Rutgers University and Alexander Shapiro from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Andrzej Ruszczyński and Alexander Shapiro are pioneering scholars in the field of stochastic programming. Each has made distinct contributions to this field. They obtained foundational results, respectively, on risk-averse decision making and on complexity analysis of stochastic optimization problems. They have also made many important contributions to other areas in optimization, including decomposition methods and nonlinear analysis. Their work has had and continues to have major impact both on optimization theory and optimization practice.
